EMDR is a very effective form of short-term therapy, which can be used to address traumatic disturbance and self-limiting negative beliefs which can cause significant distress and prevent people from expressing their full potential.
EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy based on the theory that many people’s emotional difficulties are due to traumatic experience and disturbing life events. These events can be sudden harmful events such as serious accidents, crimes of violence, major losses and medical trauma, as well as conflict and disruptions during childhood. These result in the impairment of the client’s innate ability to process and to integrate the experience or experiences within the central nervous system. This can leave the individual suffering a variety of trauma symptoms, repetitive patterns, and self-limiting negative beliefs, depending on the nature of the trauma.
The core of EMDR treatment involves activating components of the traumatic memory or disturbing life event and pairing those components with alternating bilateral or dual attention stimulation. In practice, this means focussing on problematic emotional material while making particular eye-movements or holding buzzers in each hand. As unfamiliar as this might seem, this process appears to facilitate the resumption of normal emotion processing and integration. EMDR can result in the alleviation of presenting symptoms, diminution of distress from the memory, improved view of the self, relief from bodily disturbance, and resolution of present and future anticipated trauma-symptom triggers.
My particular interest is in using EMDR in relation to workplace issues, and performance enhancement for business professionals, performing artists and sports people. As well as being a powerful trauma therapy, EMDR can be used to unlock internal obstacles to confidence and performance, and to accentuate pre-existing strengths and aptitudes.
